| The following letter is written to all Christians by an ex-Mormon member of the Speaking the Truth in Love to Mormons ministry team. Clicking on the Bible references will pop up a window with the passage in NIV (New International Version). Clicking on KJV will pop up the King James Version of the same passage. |
If you saw a house on fire with someone trapped inside, what would you do? Would you drive by without doing anything? If you knew you could help the person, would you try? Nothing stimulates a sense of urgency more than a life and death situation. When you see a Mormon, do you recognize that that person will suffer the everlasting fire of hell for eternity? Do you believe that Mormonism places its members inside a burning building that collapses into hell at the moment of their death? Please read Revelation 20:15 ( KJV); Matthew 25:41 ( KJV) and Luke 16:19-31 ( KJV). It’s pretty grim to think of someone spending eternity in everlasting fire with the devil and his angels. It’s even more difficult if that someone is your spouse, child, sibling, parent or friend. The sense of urgency and our desire to help greatly increases when it involves someone we love. The Apostle Paul certainly felt this love for "his" people, the Jews; see Romans 9:1-4 ( KJV). I also feel that way for my kinsmen, the Mormons. Like followers of Judaism, Mormons believe their own works will give them righteousness. [Romans 9:31-32 ( KJV) & Romans 10:2-4 ( KJV)] In truth, every Mormon who doesn’t trust in Jesus as his or her substitute, relying solely on Christ's righteous works, is living in a house that is on fire. At the moment of death, every individual enters God’s judgment. That individual's opportunity to come to faith and be saved is past. Just because Mormons believe they have an "eternity" to become perfect, does not make it true. Truth becomes reality at death. The Mormon church was founded by a "wolf in sheep’s clothing". Matthew 7:15: ( KJV) Christian sounding doctrines that teach a false Christ spiritually trap its followers, sending them to hell. A wolf hiding as a sheep intentionally appears innocent because it wants to devour its prey unawares. The Mormon people are the victims of this deceiver. Most of them sincerely believe that theirs is the only true church. Many have huge emotional scars from the hurtful actions of others, but emphatically state that while Mormons may be hurtful, the church is perfect. They have no concept of a loving and gracious God because every "blessing" has a condition attached to it (except bodily resurrection). They have been taught that only those who renounce the Mormon faith and boldly speak out against it will spend eternity in hell! They are told that all other people, including unbelievers, will live eternity in a world that is better than earth. Mormons feel no sense of urgency for their own spiritual well being because they do not know the true eternal consequences, or how close those consequences may be. I heard a story about a man that was in one of the World Trade Center Towers after the plane crashed into it. On the 27th floor, he had ample time to get out but decided to stay to answer the phones. His coworkers made it to safety but he lost his life. Why? Obviously this man did not recognize the danger he was in. He did not feel the urgency to leave the burning building because he thought he was in a building with a solid foundation, one that would not collapse. That is the way Mormons feel about the Mormon Church. My fifth generation grandfather, John Patten, appears to have been the first member of my family to be deceived by Mormonism. He converted his brother David, who became one of the original twelve apostles under Joseph Smith. Literally thousands in my family have perished in Mormonism over the past 165 years. They are suffering the eternal consequences of rejecting the true Jesus and His gift of eternal life. Like John, I too have a brother David, named after the "great Mormon apostle" David W. Patten. Currently he is a bishop, deeply devoted to his church and walking in the footsteps of our father and grandfathers. I have other siblings, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, numerous cousins, and a mother that I love dearly. It is sadly ironic that I am the one with an "eternal family" because my children, husband, step-children, in-laws, and church family are believers and part of God’s family. We will be together forever, in the highest glory of heaven. Members of my family that stay in Mormonism and strive daily to earn this reward will one day, from hell, [like the rich man in Luke 16:23-24 ( KJV)], look up and see me, the apostate, with all that they desire. Am I a better person than they are? No! All the blessings that believers have are undeserved gifts from our loving God, including our faith and eternal life. Our response to this love FROM God is love FOR God. In love we work to share this wonderful gift with the lost. Recognizing that we ourselves did nothing to deserve God’s love can help us to be more understanding and compassionate with Mormons. Romans 3:9-12 ( KJV): Our sinful nature struggles with our desire to share God’s love. We must turn to God’s Word and see that he commands us to share his love. Will you please join us in this ministry to bring the true miracle of forgiveness to Mormons? Spend time learning about the Mormon people and their culture. Develop friendships that will give Mormons the opportunity to see God acting in your life. Love Mormons and show them through your actions what true Christianity is. When you sin, confess it to them and then point them to the Savior that paid the full price for your sin. If you get discouraged when you don’t see positive results, cling to God’s promise that His Word will always accomplish what HE desires. I invite you to come into our web site. Learn the importance of speaking the truth in love. Most importantly, learn the power of using God’s Word. Hebrews 4:12 ( KJV): My prayer is that you will enter into this ministry with the zeal that I saw in the New York City Firefighters as they rushed to save people from the burning World Trade Center Towers. Recognize that Mormons are also in a life and death situation. Become a rescuer in our ministry by loving Mormons and sharing God’s Word with them. In Christ's Perfect Love; A Fellow Christian & Ex-Mormon
